Amal Umar, a prominent actress in Kannywood, appeared in Magistrate Court ,o. 24vin the Gyadi-Gyadi area of Kano metropolis on charges of attempting to bribe a law enforcement officer. Allegedly, she offered N250,000 to ASP Salisu Bujama of the Nigeria Police Force, Zone 1 headquarters in Kano State, to halt the investigation into financial misappropriation by her boyfriend, Ramadan Inuwa. The case stemmed from a complaint filed by Alhaji Yusuf Adamu through his lawyer, H.I. Dederi, to AIG Umar Mohd Sanda on August 18, 2022, detailing Inuwa’s alleged misappropriation of N40 million in his cell phone business.
Following the petition, a police inquiry revealed that N13 million had been transferred to the bank account of Kannywood actress Amal Umar by Inuwa. CSP Bashir Muhammed, spokesperson for the Nigerian Police Force, Zone 1, Kano, stated that the actress was subsequently summoned for questioning and granted bail, but she was not permitted to depart in a car allegedly purchased by her boyfriend. Umar admitted that the funds in her account belonged to her boyfriend, asserting that he had only transferred N8 million to her. After securing bail, she pursued legal action by petitioning the High Court of Nano to halt further police investigation against her.
The court’s ruling temporarily halted the police investigation into the actress, which reportedly allowed Amal to try bribing the police investigator, ASP Salisa Bujama. However, the police foiled the attempt of the alleged bribery. Consequently, she was brought before the Magistrate’s Court for arraignment on Wednesday, charged with violating Section 118 of the penal Code, whilch prohibits bribery of a police officer.
