Senate Approves Legislation Addressing Student Loan Reform

The Senate approved the Student Loan, Access to Higher Education Act 2024 after reviewing the report from the senate committee on tertiary institutions and TETFUND, presented by Senator Muntari Danduste during plenary. President Bola Tinubu had sent the Bill to the National Assembly last week for deliberation and passage.

The upper Legislative chamber expedited the process by suspending relevant sections of its standing rules and referred the Bill to the committee of the Whole for consideration.

Following the debate on the Bill, Senate President Godswill Akpabio directed it to the Senate Committee on Tertiary review. The committee is tasked with reporting back within one week. The Bill aims to facilitate affordable access to higher education for disadvantaged Nigerians by offering interest-free loans through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, as outlined in the Act.
