Lagos Environment Commissioner Issues 48-Hour Notice to Owners of Properties on Drainage Channel Right-of-Way in Jakande Estate, Oke-Afa,Isolo

This morning, May 14, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Rescources in Lagos State, Tokunbo Wahab, issued a 48-hour contravention notice to property owners in Jakande Estate, Oke-Afa, Isolo, who have built structures on the Right-of-Way of drainage Chaney. Wahab shared the notice on his social media handle.

Two weeks ago, the demolition occurred in Mende, during which an impacted resident claimed they were only given a two-hour notice to evacuate the property before demolition. Additionally, the state government has been criticized for not providing adequate notice to affected residents prior to the demolition of structures.

In an effort to address this misconception, the Commissioner posted the notice and wrote;

“Has issued a 48-hour contravention notice to owners of properties built on Right-of-Way of drainage channel in Jakande Estate, Oke-Afa, Isolo.

“This is in accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017 and Renewed drive of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu

administration’s effort to ensure free flow of rainwater and prevent flooding across the State.”
